International Conference on Housing

NOVA - Norwegian Social Research is pleased to invite you to the 24th ENHR conference 24-27 June 2012 at Lillehammer, Norway. The theme this year is: Housing: Local Welfare and Local Markets in a Globalised World.

Housing is an immobile good that is locally produced, and consumed and distributed through local markets. At the same time these local markets are strongly dependent on international financial and capital markets. Change and instability in global markets will for instance affect all homeowners, in both their housing costs and the value of their housing investments. The strength of such effects depends heavily on the debt-equity ratio of individual homeowners.

Such international dependency was demonstrated during the financial crisis in 2008 and seems nowadays to be an even greater problem. We will focus on this in a plenary session where Øystein Dørum, Chief Economist in the biggest Norwegian Bank, DNB, will show how local and national markets respond to trends and changes in international markets. Such effects vary from one country to another and one that has been strongly affected is Spain. Javier Burón Cuadrado from Bilbao will explain how housing investments, housing markets and the economic situation of households in Spain, during a short period of time, have become very problematic.

Workshops
The workshops are the core of the ENHR conferences. We are pleased to offer 24 different workshops. Many of them feature regularly on ENHR conference programmes but the topics for discussion change over time in response to current issues and concerns. All workshop coordinators have prepared their invitations, announcing the topics they wish their workshop papers to focus on. Some have chosen to formulate their invitation to reflect the Lillehammer conference theme. But regardless of the topics to be covered, the conference will be an open and inclusive arena where the papers presented and discussed in the workshops will mirror what is going on at the moment in European housing research.

We look forward to seeing you in Lillehammer in June 2012.
