Bjørn Hvinden presented the centre and gave a talk on ‘Economic success and deficient integration - the price of the Nordic model’s success’, at a seminar for the staff of the Research Council of Norway, Oslo, February 28.

Strand 6 ‘Combating exclusion - the case of people with disabilities’ organised a first workshop & seminar with speakers from the Nordic countries & the Netherlands, Oslo, March 5.

Bjørn Hvinden gave keynote talk ‘The Nordic and European Social Models: different responses to globalisation and demographic ageing’, at the opening seminar of the Academy of Finland Research Programme ‘The Future of Work and Well-being’ (2008-2011), Helsinki, March 11.

Nordic conference ‘Pension systems for the future’, organised by the Research Centre for Social Studies (RCSS), in collaboration with REASSESS, May 7, University of Iceland, Reykjavik. Speakers: Olli Kangas, Joakim Palme, Jørgen Goul Andersen, Axel West Pedersen, Stéfan Ólafsson, and Hrafn Magnússon. The conference received support from the Social Security Administration of Iceland, the Icelandic Ministry of Social Affairs and the Federation of Icelandic Pension Funds.

PhD course ‘Academic Writing in English’, given by Natalie Reid, Lysebu hotel, Oslo, May 19-23, arranged in cooperation between REASSESS and the Department of Social Work and Health Science, NTNU. 23 participants.

First workshop of strand 5 ‘Migration as a challenge to the Nordic Welfare Model’ in collaboration with the Stockholm University Linnaeus Center for Integration Studies (SULCIS), Stockholm University, June 11.

June

European conference, organised by REASSESS together with the Institute for Research in Economics and Business Administration (Bergen) and the EU 6th FP Network of Excellence ‘Reconciling work and welfare’ (RECWOWE), in Oslo June 10-14. The conference included a special half-day plenary session on the Nordic Model chaired by Bjørn Hvinden, June 13; speakers: Kalle Moene (Oslo University), Nabanita Datta Gupta (SFI, Copenhagen), and Ann Orloff (Northwestern University, US); prepared comments from Chiara Saracen (Turin University, Italy) and Anton Hemerijck (Rotterdam University, the Netherlands). The conference had approx. 150 participants from most countries in Europe.

First workshop of strand 10 ‘Changes in patterns of poverty, social exclusion and other outcomes in the Nordic countries’, aimed at investigating the possibilities for research exchange and collaboration in the field of poverty and social exclusion, University of Turku, June 17-18.

First workshop of strand 1 ‘Care in ageing and diversifying societies’, held at SFI (Danish National Centre for Social Research), Copenhagen, June 25. Organised in connection with the international conference ‘Transforming elderly care at local, national and transnational levels’, June 26-28.

Second workshop of strand 9 where draft chapters for two anthologies were presented and discussed, University of Iceland, Reykjavik, August 21-23.

REASSESS contributed to a  national conference on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Harstad University College, Norway, with plenary talks about aspects of the Nordic Welfare Model by members of REASSESS’ steering committee; Jørgen Goul Andersen, Gunhild Hagestad and Bjørn Hvinden, September 22-23.

PhD course on ‘The Role of Ideas, Discourses and Frames in Welfare Policies’. Organised by Anette Borchorst and Jørgen Goul Andersen, Aalborg University, October 1-3.

Strand 3 ‘Welfare regimes and parent-child relations’ arranged a first workshop, discussing conceptual grid, specific empirical issues within grid and identifying potential participants, hotel Gabels hus, Oslo, October 20.

November

PhD course on ‘Comparative Analysis of Welfare Models and Welfare Reform’, given by Jørgen Goul Andersen & Bjørn Hvinden (both REASSESS) and Bent Greve (Roskilde University & the Danish Research School on Welfare State and Diversity), Roskilde University, Denmark, November 5-7. Other lecturers and paper commentators included Drs Bruno Palier (Sciences Po, Paris) and Clare Bambra (Durham University, the UK). 12 participants.

PhD course ‘Trends and Challenges in Nordic Disability Policy’, organised in collaboration with the Nordic Network on Disability Research (NNDR) and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Department of Social Work and Health Science, November 17-18, Oslo. Second part held in Trondheim in February 2009. Lecturers: Mark Priestley (Leeds University, the UK), Rafael Lindqvist (Gothenburg University; Sweden) and Jan Tøssebro (NTNU, Norway). 20 participants.

PhD course ‘Regression Analysis of Survey Data’, arranged in collaboration with The Danish Research School: Welfare State and Diversity and The Finnish Research School: Labour Net, at Aalborg University, November 26-28. Lecturers: Henrik Lolle (Aalborg University), Viggo Nordvik (NOVA) & Heikki Ervasti (Turku University). 8 participants.

Second workshop of strand 2, with the theme ‘Challenges and changes for family policies’, SFI (Danish National Centre for Social Research), Copenhagen, November 27-28. Keynote speakers: Gösta Esping Andersen and Ulla Björnberg. In connection with the workshop there was a meeting on November 26, concerning a book project on challenges for future family policies in the Nordic countries.

Strands 4 & 8 arranged second joint workshop on ‘Economic sustainability and social outcomes: Nordic welfare states confronting financial crisis’, January 14-16, Oslo.

Bjørn Hvinden gave a talk on ‘Poverty in the Nordic Countries - what do we know?’, at a conference organised by Lillehammer University College and a social NGO, ‘Justice for Society’s Losers’, targeted at administrators and politicians, January 28, Lillehammer.

Financed by the Nordic Council of Ministers with support from REASSESS and others. Public lecture by Guðný Björk Eydal, ’Is there a Nordic model of day care for children?’.

International conference on ‘The Political and Social Economy of Care’ (PASEC), Stockholm, October 26, organised by Marta Szebehely, Teppo Kröger and Anneli Anttonen, financed by REASSESS. Presenters: Christina Bergqvist, Barbara Hobson, Marta Szebehely from Sweden; Anneli Anttonen, Teppo Kröger from Finland; Deborah Brennan and Bettina Cass from Australia; Sue Himmelweit, Fiona Williams and Sue Yeandle from the UK; and Rianne Mahon and Ito Peng from Canada. The scholars behind the conference also met for an internal workshop immediately after the conference. Planned outcome from the conference/ workshop is a joint book with the working title ‘Providing care in a globalising world: the role of markets and migration’.
