Kort presentasjon av prosjektet: The Family Group Conference (FGC) is an idea that originated in New Zealand and is now starting to take off around the world. It is basically a model for resolving conflict or problems in families, by enlisting the support of a network of extended family and friends, who get together at a FGC meeting to make a plan, which states how they will support the family. Family group conferences are a way of giving families the chance to make the best plan possible for children. The decision makers at a family group conference are the family members, and not the professionals. It is here that the mother or father or aunt or grandfather gets together with the child or young person and the rest of the family to talk, make plans and decide how to resolve the situation. NOVA (Norwegian Social Research) finished a big national project on FGC in 2006. During the course of the project period it proved difficult to access ethnic minority families as participants. In 2007, however, Oslo City represented by Department of Welfare and Social Affairs initiated a project, in cooperation with NOVA. This project wants to focus on specific knowledge about how FGC work in families with minority background. The objective for this project is to generate knowledge on how FGC can provide the family’s whit improved services and help from Oslo’s Child Welfare Services. And also identify, if there are any, specific cultural issues or aspects to consider when implementing FGC. The design of this project was initially based on collecting data (questionnaires and interviews) right after the first FGC in the family (T1). The pre/post design makes it possible for a one year follow-up study (T2). Our main obstacle is that Oslo city still is in a implementing faze when it comes to FGC in minority families.
